Want to join me in supporting a good cause? This #GivingTuesday I’m raising money for Visions Services For The Blind And Visually Impaired. VISIONS, a nonprofit vision rehabilitation and social service organization, develops and implement programs to: assist blind people of all ages to lead independent and active lives and educate the public about the capabilities and needs of blind people so that they may be integrated into all aspects of community life. Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. And on Giving Tuesday, Nov 27, Facebook and PayPal will match a total of $7 Million in donations.
Blind Motherhood & VISIONS:
When my daughters were toddlers, we spent almost every afternoon exploring the Staten Island Zoo. I pulled my youngest child in a stroller behind me, relying on my guide dog, Frances, to lead the way. My oldest girl had large bells tied to her sneakers, and I would listen to the sounds of her jiggling feet to know she was walking close by. Often times people would stare at our family, making inappropriate comments about me being a blind mother.
“I didn’t think blind people were capable of being parents.”
“Did you ever consider putting your children up for adoption so they could have a normal life?”
“You can’t possibly take care of those kids by yourself; you can’t see!”
Perfect strangers doubted my ability to raise my family. They could not conceive of a world where a blind woman was a happily married, well-educated, and capable mother.
VISIONS is working diligently to eliminate stereotypes associated with blind parenting. Good parents aren’t born, they’re made whether blind or sighted. Through VISIONS services, individuals with limited sight receive the invaluable experience of working with an entire team dedicated to helping both them and their families- FREE OF CHARGE!
Helping Blind Parents in NYC & Beyond:
For blind parents like me, VISIONS presentations educate the public about adapted techniques to effectively and independently raise our families. VISIONS workshops bring new insights about the capabilities of blind people throughout the metropolitan area.
Join me in supporting VISIONS. You are helping to positively change the life of a blind person, and investing in the families of tomorrow. Your dollars are giving voice to the blind parenting and working community, shattering ignorant misconceptions about our abilities and designing a new narrative for what blind people can offer at home, at work and in the community.
Please make a donation to VISIONS today so we can continue to show New Yorkers how to “SEE” what is possible – a more inclusive world where blind people are recognized for their capabilities. Donate on the VISIONS website by clicking HERE or mail a check made out to VISIONS to 500 Greenwich Street Suite 302 New York, NY 10013.
